Tornadoes Do's And Dont's

Do take Shelter in a basement or lowest floor

Don't run to the window to open it or look at the storm

Do Abandon Cars for shelter, don't try to drive away from a tornado.

Don't hide under overpasses

Do hide in a ditch if caught outdoors

Don't get in your  car if the sirens are sounding

Do have a plan of action if you live in a tornado prone area

Don't chase storms if you have no knowledge of what you are doing

Don't get in your car if the sirens are sounding.

Live in a house?

Seek Shelter away from windows. Best place is a basement or cellar. If none is available, find an interior closet or bathtub. Protect yourself with a bike helmet and as much padding as possible. A bed mattress works great over a bath tub. Have a weather radio with an alarm to warn you if there is approaching severe weather. If a tornado is approaching and you have LOTS of time to evacuate, seek shelter in a city shelter. Call your local emergency management for more details. Do not seek city shelters if the sirens are sounding! You don't want to get caught in traffic.

Apartment Living

Apartments offer little shelter from tornadoes. It is a good idea to get to know your neighbors on the 1st floor in case you need to take shelter. Top floor apartments are a bad idea to remain during a tornado.  If the sirens are sounding it is too late. Seek substantial shelter immediately!

Mobile Home

Never remain in a mobile home during any severe storm. Seek shelter in a sturdy building. Allow yourself plenty of time to escape.

Below is what could happen during an F5 tornado.
